North Carolina (Reuters) - Actor Andy Griffith, who made "The Andy Griffith Show" to be one of the
most lasting impression on American television, has died at his home in North Carolina, WITN
television reported Tuesday.

The television station quoted an old friend Andy, who said the actor who plays the sheriff in a
small town in the show "The Andy Griffith Show" and now 86 years old, died at his home on
Roanoke Island.

News from the Dare County Sheriff says only one ambulance sent to the residence of Andy but no
further details, according to Reuters - which monitored ANTARA here on Tuesday night.

Andrew Samuel "Andy" Griffith - June 1, 1926 - 3 July 2012) is an actor, director, producer, author
of America and Southern gospel singer who won a Grammy Award.

He played in the epic movie filmed director Elia Kazan, "A Face in the Crowd (1957)", before making
a mark through his role on television. He plays the main character in the 1960-1968 sitcom "The
Andy Griffith Show".

He also appeared in the 1985-95 legal drama "Matlock". Andy was awarded the Presidential Medal
of Freedom by U.S. President George W, Bush on 9 November 2005. He died on July 3, 2012, at the
age of 86 years.
